Make some Salt Dough Christmas Decorations to personalise your tree

Salt dough is incredibly easy to make and a fun way to encourage little hands to help in the kitchen. Making decorations with this dough is great as they keep for years to come and can really brighten up the tree. They make great little homemade gifts for Granny & Grandpas too!

Ingredients:

  • 250g Plain Flour
  • 250g Salt
  • 250ml Water

Making the Dough:

Mix together the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the water a little at a time until you have a soft dough. Knead the dough for a few minutes until soft and springy. You are best to leave the dough to rest for about 20 minutes. While your dough is resting cover two large baking trays with baking paper.

Creating your shapes

Lightly flour your work surface and roll out your dough. Using a rolling pin roll your dough until it is approximately 1cm thick. Cut out your decorations using cookie cutters or Playdoh cutters work well too! At this point you could add in some sparkly glitter, glass beads or pretty gem stones to make your shapes shine if you wish!

Get creative with hand or footprints

Don’t forget to make a hole in your decorations to thread ribbon so they will hang beautifully from your tree. We use a skewer for this. Make sure your hole is quite large as the dough expands in the oven which can cause the hole to close over.

Drying your Salt Dough

Don’t rush this bit! You must dry the shapes on a baking tray in an oven on a very low heat for 2-3 hours. Pop your oven on at 110°C and leave the decorations until completely dried out. You can leave them to dry naturally although this can take between 24-48 hours.

Once completely dried out and cooled you are free to decorate your shapes as you wish. Paint them pretty colours, make them sparkle with glitter and finish off with some pretty ribbon!
